AMMAN — On Sunday, the Court of Cassation upheld the decision of the Court of Appeals not to dissolve the Jordanian Teachers’ Syndicate (JTS) Council, said syndicate attorney Bassam Freihat, a decision viewed as “a moral gain” by the council Vice President Nasser Al-Nawasrah, but of “no value on the ground, given that the council has already been dissolved”.اضافة اعلان

The more recent case , according to Freihat, concerns “donations made by the members of the syndicate’s council for the benefit of the country” to help counter losses due the COVID-19 pandemic; “at the time, 25 colleagues claimed that the donation was illegal, and asked for the council to be dissolved”.

“The Court of First Instance issued the decision to dissolve the council, but later, the Court of Appeals canceled the decision, considering that the council’s behavior was noble and correct,” he said.

However, following another case in June this year, this time connected to insurance issues, the Court of Appeals ordered the syndicate and council dissolved, and gave council members, initial prison terms of one year, which were later reduced to three months, a decision upheld by the Court of Cassation.

Sunday the Court of Cassation upheld the decision of the Court of Appeals, considering that “there is no need to issue a decision to dissolve a council that is already dissolved,” Freihat said.

Nawasrah said that the decision to dissolve the council was issued in June, and the syndicate regulations stipulate that a new committee be formed within six months from the decision, in order to organize elections to elect a new council, but “three months have passed” and no committee has been formed yet, due to “some delays by authorities”.

Head of the Public Prosecution at the Court of Cassation Youssef Thiabat rejected JTS’ request to have the June decision that dissolved the syndicate’s council, central body, and branches, and gave council members jail sentences revised.

As a result, the ruling to dissolve the council and its members’ prison sentences is final.
