Jean-Martin Bauer, Director of Food Security and Nutrition Analysis at the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), on Friday night urged urgent action in response to the outbreak of famine in the Gaza Strip, stressing that this is the first time famine has been confirmed in the Middle East.

According to the official WFP website, Bauer made the remarks during a press conference on his assessment of the report issued by the Global IPC Initiative (Integrated Food Security Phase Classification).
Bauer explained that famine represents “severe food deprivation, widespread acute malnutrition, and deaths caused by hunger.”
He emphasized the importance of safeguarding the data systems that will guide humanitarian responses, noting that the famine in the Middle East marks a “historic moment.”
