The ongoing conflict in Sudan since April 15, 2023, between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo has killed tens of thousands, displaced around 12 million people, and caused what the United Nations has described as the “worst humanitarian crisis” in the world.

Speaking at the UN headquarters in New York, Idris called for a “ceasefire under joint monitoring by the United Nations, the African Union, and the Arab League, to be accompanied by the withdrawal of the rebel militia from all areas it occupies” and its “disarmament.”

He also called for a “Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue during the transitional period” to agree on the foundations of governance, with the transition to conclude with general elections under international supervision.

Idris expressed hope for “unconditional support” from Security Council members for this plan, describing it as “complementary to the Saudi-American-Egyptian peace initiative.”

In November, U.S. President Donald Trump’s stated desire to intervene to end the war between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces raised hopes of a breakthrough.

However, negotiations led by the United States with other mediators in the so-called “Quad” (Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates) have reached a dead end.
