One source, speaking on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to brief the media, said that “a technical malfunction caused the crash of a military cargo plane of the Ilyushin type while attempting to land at Dagana Air Base.”
Another military source confirmed the “death of all crew members aboard the Ilyushin-76 aircraft.”
The Sudanese army has not disclosed the number of personnel on board, and no official casualty figures have been released.
The Ilyushin-76 cargo plane, designed in the former Soviet Union, has long been a backbone of the Sudanese military, used to transport supplies and personnel along conflict lines.
This incident comes as Sudan faces one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
The ongoing war since April 2023 between the army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and forced around 12 million people to be displaced internally or seek refuge abroad, while severely damaging the country’s infrastructure.
