On Wednesday, Sudanese Sovereign Council Chairman Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan warned that the ongoing conflict led by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) poses a threat to the entire region. He emphasized that Sudan stands at a crossroads: "either collapse and chaos, or recovery and stability."

In an opinion piece published by the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, Burhan welcomed efforts aimed at achieving a just and equitable peace in Sudan, stressing that the country is fighting for survival to secure such peace.
He called on the United States and regional allies to take decisive steps to end the war that has been ongoing since April 2023, asserting that "any lasting peace requires the dismantling of the Rapid Support Forces."
Burhan praised recent statements by U.S. President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, saying they "named the facts and identified the party responsible for the conflict," and urged Washington to build on this clarity by taking the next steps. He also noted that Trump’s positive remarks following meetings with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman were encouraging.
Origins of the Conflict
Burhan traced the roots of the crisis to the RSF’s rebellion against the state in April 2023, stating that the militia secretly mobilized forces around Khartoum, seized strategic locations, and attacked government and military facilities.
He detailed:
The RSF’s early secret movements in Khartoum and other major cities.
The takeover of strategic sites and attacks on governmental and military premises, which ignited the war.
Documentation by the UN Human Rights Council and other organizations of mass killings, sexual violence, and terror against civilians.
Reports that when the RSF captured Al-Fashir in late October, thousands of civilians were massacred, with field sources estimating around 10,000 victims, roughly five times the number killed in the 9/11 attacks.
Burhan indicated that the only remaining option for RSF members may be integration into the national army, but only under strict professional standards.
