George Desmond Kamurasi, a British goalkeeper and captain of an amateur football team in England, has been chosen as the new king of the Toro people in western Uganda.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, Kamurasi, 36, plays for CE Dons in the South East Counties League. He was selected by a 21-member “College of the Kingdom,” receiving 15 of the 18 votes cast, making him the monarch of a community of around 800,000 people.
Kamurasi was born in England and holds British citizenship, but he comes from Uganda’s Toro royal family. He is a member of the Babito royal dynasty and the son of Prince George Desmond “Jimmy” Mugenyi. He succeeds his cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died of cancer at the age of 34. His funeral is scheduled for September 12.
Despite his royal background, Kamurasi’s life was far removed from the throne. He lost his mother at the age of 14 and later fell in with the wrong crowd, making mistakes that eventually led to a prison sentence. Reflecting on that period, he said he learned to take responsibility for his actions.
His football journey began at a young age after his talent was discovered by the Nike Academy. He later says he played for Barcelona while Pep Guardiola was watching.
Remarkably, Kamurasi was still playing football just days before his selection as king. Last Saturday, he played for CE Dons against Erith Town, helping his team secure a 2–0 victory in the preliminary round of the FA Cup.
He now faces a major decision: whether to remain in England or move to Uganda to take on his new royal responsibilities.
