Sunak reported that Zelenskyy informed him that 80% of the casualties inflicted by the Ukrainian army on Russian forces are caused by drones, describing this as evidence of a radical shift in the nature of modern warfare. He also noted that Russia is losing approximately 1,000 soldiers per day in the ongoing conflict.
Sunak reached a stark conclusion: "Europe is not ready for this kind of war." He explained that European militaries, including the British Army, still rely on traditional military models focused on heavy equipment and large forces. Conversely, the war in Ukraine has proven the superiority of unmanned systems and mass-producible, low-cost technology, such as drones and Artificial Intelligence.
Sunak called for accelerating defense spending in Europe and increasing investment in new technological capabilities to face future challenges, warning that failing to adapt to this military revolution could jeopardize continental security.
These remarks come amid escalating international debates regarding continued military support for Ukraine and the need to bolster European defense capabilities against persistent threats from Russia.
The Russian war on Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, and entered its fifth year in February 2026, with ongoing attritional fighting along a frontline stretching over 1,000 km. According to estimates by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in January 2026, combined military casualties (killed, wounded, and missing) for both sides reached approximately 1.8 million by the end of 2025, and could approach 2 million by the spring of 2026. — Al Arabiya Net
