An Iranian official in the region said on Sunday that authorities have verified the deaths of at least 5,000 people during the protests that swept Iran, including around 500 members of the security forces.

The official accused “terrorists and armed rioters” of killing “innocent Iranians.”
Speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue, the official said that some of the fiercest clashes and the highest death toll occurred in Iran’s Kurdish regions in the northwest of the country, where Kurdish separatists are active.
“The final death toll is not expected to rise sharply,” the official said, adding that “Israel and armed groups abroad” provided support and weapons to those who took to the streets.
