Syria will participate as a guest in the G7 summit in France next month, represented by President Ahmed Al-Sharaa, according to three informed sources. This marks Syria's first-ever participation in a G7 summit since the group's establishment in 1975.

One of the sources stated that an invitation addressed to Al-Sharaa to attend the summit was hand-delivered to Syrian Finance Minister Mohammad Barnieh, who attended the G7 financial talks in Paris earlier this week. The summit is scheduled to take place from June 15 to 17 in Évian-les-Bains, southeastern France.
A Syrian official, speaking as a source, noted that Syria's participation in the talks will likely focus on the country's role as a "potential strategic hub for supply chains" following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Maritime traffic through the Strait has largely ground to a halt since the outbreak of the Iran war in late February, causing severe disruptions to the global economy.
Syria, which emerged from a 14-year civil war as a Western ally, is seeking to rebuild its economy, which was devastated by years of conflict and sanctions.
While most of the sanctions imposed during the rules of former Presidents Hafez and Bashar al-Assad have been eased, attracting foreign investment and resuming normal banking relations have proven slower and more difficult than many officials had hoped.
