The US Supreme Court on Monday temporarily blocked the implementation of restrictions imposed by President Donald Trump's administration on mail-in voting, as voting procedures for the upcoming midterm elections have already begun.

The court's decision allows states to continue sending and processing mail-in ballots under procedures that have been in place for years, without implementing the new rules for the time being.
The Trump administration had asked the court to allow the restrictions to take effect before the November elections, which will determine the balance of power in Congress.
The case carries particular significance because roughly one-third of US voters cast their ballots by mail.
Election officials said making sweeping changes to the voting system just weeks before the elections would be extremely difficult, particularly as states including Alabama, North Carolina and Wisconsin have already begun sending ballots to voters.
The Trump administration's plan required states to use a standardized ballot-envelope format and submit lists of eligible voters to an online portal.
The proposed rules would also have allowed the US Postal Service to refuse to deliver ballots to states that failed to comply with the new requirements.
