Syrian judicial authorities have issued a decision to refer the defendant Wasim al-Assad — a cousin of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad — to the Referral Judge in preparation for his trial. The Ministry of Justice stated that this step comes as part of efforts to reinforce transparency and judicial accountability, ensure the rule of law, and uphold the independence of the judiciary, reflecting the state’s commitment to applying justice objectively and without discrimination.

A video published by the ministry on its social media pages showed the interrogation of Wasim al-Assad by the Seventh Investigative Judge, Tawfiq Al-Ali. Several charges were brought against him, including: forming criminal combat groups affiliated with the Fourth Division in 2012; supervising the financing of these groups with weapons and money in coordination with Brigadier General Ghiath Dalleh; arming members of auxiliary militias in the al-Mleiha area; and committing acts of intimidation, terror, and causing the killing of civilians in Jaramana in 2012.
Additional charges include “manipulating military service records and transferring soldiers between units, accepting bribes before and after the revolution, and establishing a close relationship with Lebanese drug trafficker Noah Zaaiter, who was recently arrested.”
Syrian Internal Security Forces had successfully arrested Wasim al-Assad on June 21 in a tightly coordinated security operation on the Syrian-Lebanese border.
