U.S. Secret Service agents evacuated President Donald Trump from the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington on Saturday evening following the sound of loud gunfire, according to AFP.

Guests attending the dinner rushed to take cover under tables after shots were heard, while security personnel stood with drawn weapons around the podium where Trump had been seated before being rushed out of the venue. Police cordoned off the Washington Hilton, which was hosting the event, as helicopters patrolled the airspace overhead.
The U.S. Secret Service later confirmed in a statement that the President and First Lady Melania are "safe" following the shooting incident. The agency, tasked with protecting presidents and high-ranking officials, stated: "The President and First Lady are safe [along with] all protectees," noting that one individual is in custody and the incident occurred at the event's main security checkpoint.
Trump's Response
In his first comment on the incident, Trump announced on "Truth Social" that "the shooter has been apprehended." He added: "An eventful night in Washington. The Secret Service and law enforcement did a fantastic job."
The Secret Service clarified that one person is being interrogated regarding the shooting at the annual dinner. They emphasized that the President and his wife were unharmed and that law enforcement authorities are still assessing the situation.
Trump further noted on Truth Social that he had spoken with the event organizers and that the dinner would be rescheduled within 30 days. He added that law enforcement requested everyone vacate the building in accordance with protocol.
Details of the Chaos
According to Reuters, the evacuation occurred mid-event after loud bangs were heard. Immediately, attendees stopped talking, and people began screaming, "Get down, get down!"
Hundreds of guests took cover under tables as Secret Service agents in combat gear rushed into the dining hall. Trump and Melania shielded themselves behind the podium before agents hurried them out. Many of the 2,600 attendees hid, while servers fled to the front of the hall.
Suspect Identified
President Trump posted the first image of the suspect on "Truth Social," along with a video clip showing the individual running while attempting to cross a security checkpoint.

Fox News reported that the suspect has been identified as "Cole Thomas Allen," a 31-year-old from California.
