This meeting occurs on the 61st day since the outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, and 22 days into the current truce. According to the Wall Street Journal, U.S. officials stated that President Donald Trump has instructed his aides to prepare for a long-term blockade of Iran.
Officials noted that Trump has concluded that resuming airstrikes or withdrawing from the conflict carries greater risks than maintaining the current blockade.
Diplomatic Maneuvering and the Strait of Hormuz
President Trump previously stated that "Iran has informed us they are in a state of collapse and is demanding the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz." Meanwhile, the Washington Post cited a Pakistani official reporting that Tehran is offering to reopen the Strait in exchange for Washington lifting the blockade on its ports.
According to CNN, sources indicate that Iran is expected to submit a revised proposal to intermediaries in Pakistan within the coming days. Concurrently, Reuters reported that U.S. intelligence agencies are assessing Iran's potential response should President Trump declare a "unilateral victory."
Domestic and Regional Tensions
In the United States, TIME magazine reported that Congressional Democrats are weighing a lawsuit against the Trump administration if the conflict persists beyond this Friday’s legal deadline without formal Congressional authorization.
In Lebanon, President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned Israeli strikes targeting Civil Defense personnel in the south. Prime Minister Salam characterized the targeting of rescue workers as a "new war crime."
Despite the temporary truce, Israel has escalated its military operations through airstrikes and artillery shelling in southern Lebanon. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated, "We have issued instructions to destroy all terrorist infrastructure in the security zone in southern Lebanon up to the Yellow Line."
