The move is expected to be welcomed by Washington, which seeks to curb Iran’s influence in Iraq and other parts of the Middle East.

Iran considers Iraq a vital lifeline for its economy under sanctions, but Baghdad—an ally of both the United States and Iran—fears pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding its ties with Tehran.

One week earlier, President Trump signed an executive order initiating the process of designating certain branches of the Muslim Brotherhood as “Foreign Terrorist Organizations.”

The order states that the measure “launches a process under which some branches or subgroups of the Muslim Brotherhood will be considered Foreign Terrorist Organizations,” referring specifically to Brotherhood branches in several Arab countries.

The executive order asserts that these branches “commit, facilitate, or support violence and destabilization campaigns that harm their regions, U.S. citizens, and U.S. interests.”
