The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, early today extended his congratulations to the people of Iraq on holding the parliamentary elections, and to the Independent High Electoral Commission for its efforts in ensuring effective preparation and execution of the polls.

In a statement issued on his behalf, Guterres welcomed the smooth and orderly conduct of the elections, expressing confidence that political stakeholders will maintain a spirit of peace and respect for the electoral process while awaiting the results.
He emphasized the importance of forming a government in a timely and peaceful manner that reflects the will of the Iraqi people and meets their aspirations for stability and development, reiterating the UN’s commitment to supporting Iraq in consolidating democratic gains and fulfilling the hopes of all Iraqis for a peaceful and prosperous future.
Guterres also noted that with the approaching conclusion of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) mandate, he wishes to express appreciation for the long-standing partnership between the mission and Iraqi electoral institutions, marking the end of more than two decades of electoral assistance provided by UNAMI.
