Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Thursday that two oil tankers and a tugboat had separately caught fire after attempting to use unauthorized routes through the Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC said one tanker struck a sea mine while attempting to cross a passage south of the strait. A second, very large crude carrier caught fire after veering off course in the eastern section of the waterway.
A tugboat that approached the second tanker to help extinguish the fire also caught fire, according to the statement.
