The Council of the League of Arab States strongly condemned Israel’s recognition of the secession of Somalia’s northwestern region, the so-called “Somaliland,” expressing its rejection of any measures stemming from this invalid recognition aimed at facilitating plans for the forced displacement of the Palestinian people or allowing the use of northern Somali ports to establish military bases.

To discuss the repercussions of the decision, the Council of the League of Arab States, at the level of permanent representatives, held an extraordinary session on Sunday at the request of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
In a statement issued following the meeting, the Council reaffirmed the firm and clear Arab position that Somalia’s northwestern region, the so-called “Somaliland,” is an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia, in accordance with the Charter and principles of the League of Arab States, the United Nations Charter, and the charters of all organizations of which Somalia is a member. It rejected any attempt to recognize its secession, whether directly or indirectly.
The Council also stressed that Israel’s illegal recognition constitutes part of Israel’s attempts—as an occupying power under international law—to undermine international peace and security, and represents an assault on Arab national security, warranting legal, economic, political, and diplomatic measures against it.
It reaffirmed support for Somalia’s security, stability, unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, and support for the Federal Government of Somalia in its efforts to safeguard Somali sovereignty by land, sea, and air. The Council emphasized Somalia’s right to legitimate self-defense in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter and relevant provisions of the League’s Charter, and pledged to back any measures Somalia may take to confront attempts of aggression within the framework of international legitimacy.
The Council considered the Israeli moves a dangerous attempt to reshape the geopolitical map of the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea off the Somali coast, and called on the international community to confront these actions as threats to regional and international peace and security, as well as to freedom of navigation and international trade.
It also reiterated its categorical rejection of any form of forced displacement of the Palestinian people from their land and any attempts to alter the demographic composition of Palestinian territory, considering such actions a form of genocide and a grave violation of international law and international legitimacy resolutions, undermining efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace.
The Council called for mobilizing the necessary support to secure UN decisions affirming Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, rejecting Israel’s recognition step, and deeming it null and void and a threat to regional and international peace and security.
It further urged Arab ambassadorial councils in New York, Geneva, Vienna, Brussels, Addis Ababa, Washington, London, Paris, Beijing, and Moscow to take the necessary steps to convey this statement to foreign ministries and relevant authorities in those countries and to international organizations based there, and to clarify the gravity of this step and its political and security repercussions on Somali, regional, and international peace and security.
