The United States deployed naval ships in the Caribbean and sent F-35 fighter jets to Puerto Rico as part of a military operation aimed at stopping drug trafficking to U.S. territory.

In recent weeks, more than 15 U.S. strikes on alleged drug-smuggling boats in the Caribbean have killed at least 65 people, drawing criticism from regional governments.

Hegseth posted on X that the strike hit “another drug-smuggling boat… in the Caribbean region,” adding that “this boat, like others, is known to our intelligence for involvement in drug trafficking.”

He stated that three suspected drug traffickers were on board during the strike in international waters, and all three were killed.

Experts have described these attacks, which began in early September, as extrajudicial killings, even if targeting known drug traffickers, noting that Washington has not provided evidence to support its claims.

Hegseth affirmed that the U.S. will continue to “pursue… and kill” alleged drug traffickers.
