As interest in creating "non-toxic kitchens" grows online, scientists are examining how everyday cooking tools may contribute to plastic exposure.

Plastic Cutting Boards May Release Microplastics
Every time vegetables or other foods are chopped on a plastic cutting board, microscopic plastic particles can be transferred directly into food.

A 2023 study described plastic cutting boards as a "potentially significant source of microplastics in human food." Researchers estimated that a polyethylene cutting board could release between 7.4 and 50.7 grams of microplastics per person annually.

Plastic Containers and Kitchen Tools Also Contribute
Potential sources of microplastics extend beyond cutting boards. Food storage containers, plastic takeaway packaging, cooking utensils, plastic wrap, dishwasher detergent pods, and even microfiber cleaning cloths made from synthetic fibers may shed tiny plastic particles during everyday use.

Why the Topic Is Gaining Attention
Interest in reducing plastic exposure has surged on social media platforms such as TikTok, fueled by growing awareness of the materials that come into contact with food.

Researchers say increasing evidence suggests that common kitchen items may be overlooked sources of daily exposure to plastic-related chemicals.

Tracy Woodruff, a professor at the University of California, San Francisco, told NPR that it is "very likely" a significant portion of people's exposure to microplastics comes from the food they eat.

Concerns Over Non-Stick Cookware
The issue is not limited to plastic products.

Non-stick cookware coated with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) can release PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) if the coating becomes scratched, and may emit chemicals when overheated.

PFAS are often referred to as "forever chemicals" because they persist in the environment and have been linked to long-term health concerns.

A separate 2023 study also found that heating food in plastic containers can release millions of microplastic particles and billions of even smaller nanoplastic particles into food.

Human Health Risks Still Under Investigation
Despite these findings, scientists emphasize that research into the health effects of microplastics is still evolving.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says current scientific evidence does not demonstrate that the levels of microplastics or nanoplastics found in food pose a risk to human health.

Much of the strongest evidence so far comes from animal studies, rather than research involving humans.

Susan Brander, an environmental toxicologist at Oregon State University, told NPR that while definitive human evidence is still lacking, animal studies suggest similar effects could eventually be demonstrated in people.

Practical Ways to Reduce Exposure
Experts do not recommend replacing every plastic item in the kitchen immediately. However, when it is time to replace food storage containers, switching to glass containers may be a worthwhile option.

They also suggest paying attention to the materials used for cutting boards, cooking utensils, food storage containers, and cleaning tools.

Replacing plastic items with alternatives made of glass, wood, stainless steel, or other non-plastic materials can help reduce unnecessary exposure to microplastics.
