A recent medical study has shown that polyphenols found in plant-based foods help protect vision and maintain eye health.

The study, published in the journal Nutrients, found that polyphenols—biologically active compounds of plant origin—have a protective effect against eye diseases associated with oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and metabolic disorders. These include glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, and diseases of the ocular surface.اضافة اعلان

Researchers examined the effects of various types of polyphenols, including anthocyanins, curcumin, resveratrol, quercetin, and ferulic acid. The results showed that these compounds are capable of reducing damage to retinal cells and the optic nerve, decreasing inflammation, influencing abnormal blood vessel growth, and supporting the function of antioxidant systems in the eye.

The scientists noted that most of the findings were derived from experiments conducted on cells and laboratory animals. Therefore, clinical studies are needed to determine the effects of polyphenols on humans and to establish precise recommendations regarding optimal dosages, forms of intake, and their long-term safety for eye health.

They stressed that polyphenols should be viewed as dietary supplements that help maintain eye health and support medical treatment, rather than as a substitute for medications. (Lenta.ru)
