Dr. Zarima Amrova, a dermatologist and cosmetologist, points out that chapped and peeling lips cause discomfort and may be a sign of more serious internal health issues.اضافة اعلان

She explains:
"The red border of the lips is a transitional zone between the skin and the mucous membrane. Lips lack a protective stratum corneum, as well as sweat glands and subcutaneous fat—sebaceous glands are found only at the corners of the mouth. This limits the lips' ability to retain moisture naturally, making them vulnerable to both external and internal influences."

According to Dr. Amrova, external factors that contribute to lip dryness include poor lip care, the habit of licking or biting the lips, dehydration, exposure to wind, low temperatures, and ultraviolet radiation. However, dry lips may also signal chronic skin conditions like eczema, dermatitis, or psoriasis.

In some cases, dry lips may be linked to internal organ dysfunction—such as kidney or pancreatic issues—or hormonal imbalances and diabetes, which cause facial skin dryness and constant thirst. Extremely pale dry lips could indicate liver problems, which may be accompanied by additional symptoms like a white coating at the corners of the mouth and bad breath. Dry lips may also occur with inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases like Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, or nervous system disorders.

Other potential causes include oral infections due to tooth decay or poorly fitted dental fillings. Acute viral respiratory infections and seasonal allergies can also contribute to dry lips.

The doctor notes that after winter, deficiencies in vitamins A, B12, C, E, as well as zinc and iron, are commonly observed—these can lead to dry lips and cracks in the corners of the mouth.

Dr. Amrova strongly recommends seeing a medical specialist if dry lips persist or recur, in order to diagnose and address the underlying cause.

If systemic diseases are ruled out, she suggests using Methyluracil ointment or products containing dexpanthenol as topical treatments for chronically dry or cracked lips. To further moisturize the lips and promote regeneration, biorevitalization with hyaluronic acid-based products is recommended.
