The United States confirmed that it has begun a review of its military presence in Europe, following statements made on the matter by Pete Hegseth last June during a meeting of NATO Defense Ministers.

Under Secretary of Defense (Pentagon) Elbridge Colby posted on X that this step will be "a real review aimed at ensuring NATO moves rapidly and irreversibly toward a Europe taking primary responsibility for its own conventional defense, as the Secretary (Hegseth) announced at the time."
He added: "The outcome of this review will accelerate NATO's transition toward a stronger, fairer, and more sustainable alliance."
The United States sharply criticized European nations that refused to allow U.S. forces to use NATO bases on their territory during the war against Iran.
Hegseth also threatened the alliance with cuts to the U.S. contribution to its budget if certain countries refuse to fulfill commitments made last year during the NATO summit in The Hague.
At that time, allies pledged to allocate at least 5% of their gross domestic product (GDP) to security spending by 2035, including 3.5% for strictly military expenditures.
