Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump noted that the discussion also covered sanctions, likely referring to US measures targeting the Brazilian judiciary over a criminal case involving former President Jair Bolsonaro.
Trump described the conversation as “great,” saying, “We talked about trade and sanctions, because, as you know, I imposed sanctions related to certain events.” On social media, he added that he looks forward to meeting Lula soon, noting, “Many good things will come from this new partnership!”
The Brazilian presidential office stated that Lula thanked Trump for lifting additional tariffs on Brazilian exports, including coffee and beef, and emphasized Brazil’s interest in advancing discussions on products still affected by tariffs.
Last month, Trump removed 40% tariffs on several Brazilian food products, including cocoa and fruits, which had been imposed in July in response to Brazil prosecuting Bolsonaro, an ally of Trump.
The 40-minute phone call, described by the Brazilian presidential office as “extremely productive,” also saw Lula stressing the urgent need to strengthen cooperation with the US in combating international organized crime.
