The United Nations on Monday denounced the world’s “indifference” to the suffering of millions across the globe, as it launched its appeal for humanitarian aid for 2026, which remains limited this year due to a sharp decline in funding.

Tom Fletcher, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, said at a press conference in New York while presenting a plan aiming to raise $23 billion to assist 87 million people in locations such as Gaza, Sudan, Haiti, Myanmar, and Ukraine: “This is a time of brutality, impunity, and indifference.”
The UN acknowledged that its $23 billion appeal will leave tens of millions of people in urgent need without assistance, as the drop in support has forced it to prioritize only the most vulnerable.
Funding cuts are among the key challenges faced by relief agencies, alongside security risks for staff in conflict zones and difficulties in accessing these areas.
