The United Nations appointed Alexander De Croo of Belgium last night as the new Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), succeeding Germany’s Achim Steiner.

After consultations with the UNDP Executive Board, UN Secretary-General António Guterres requested that the President of the General Assembly have the Assembly confirm De Croo’s appointment for a four-year term.
The General Assembly approved the nomination in a recorded vote last night, with 172 countries voting in favor, including Jordan.
According to a UN statement, De Croo has devoted a significant part of his career to public service and advancing global solidarity, combining political leadership, development cooperation, and innovation. He previously served as Prime Minister of Belgium (2020–2025), as well as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development. (Petra)
