UN Begins Process of Selecting a New Secretary-General
The United Nations circulated a letter last night, signed by the Presidents of the Security Council and the General Assembly, notifying member states of the start of the process to select a new UN Secretary-General to succeed the current chief, António Guterres.اضافة اعلان

In the past, the selection of the Secretary-General traditionally followed an unwritten rule based on geographic rotation. However, nine years ago, a candidate from Western Europe (Guterres) was chosen instead of one from Eastern Europe, as had been expected.

Among the most prominent—though unofficial—potential candidates for the position is the current Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi of Argentina.

The selection process begins with member states submitting their nominees, followed by public hearings for the candidates presented by those states. The final decision, ultimately, lies with the UN Security Council. (Petra)
