The Wall Street Journal, citing several U.S. officials, reported that Iran launched two medium-range ballistic missiles toward the Diego Garcia base; however, they failed to strike the joint U.S.-British military facility in the Indian Ocean.
The report added that one of the missiles malfunctioned during launch, while a U.S. warship fired an SM-3 interceptor at the second missile. It remains unclear whether the interception was successful. The newspaper did not specify exactly when the missiles were launched.
The White House, the British Embassy in Washington, and the Department of Defense did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.
The war with Iran has entered its 22nd day since its outbreak on February 28, 2026, following large-scale airstrikes by the United States and Israel under operations "Epic Fury" and "Lion's Roar." These strikes targeted vital facilities, military sites, and command centers in Tehran and other cities, resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on the first day, along with senior officials and commanders, including the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, and prominent leaders of the Revolutionary Guard.
In response, Iran launched operation "True Promise 4," firing hundreds of missiles and drones toward Israel and regional countries, while closing the Strait of Hormuz, which caused a spike in energy prices.
The conflict expanded to Lebanon on March 2, after Hezbollah fired missiles at Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Ali Khamenei. Israel responded with extensive airstrikes and a ground incursion into Southern Lebanon.
