Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated on Monday that Tehran’s proposal to end the war with the United States and reopen the Strait of Hormuz is "legitimate and generous," adding that Washington continues to cling to "unreasonable and unilateral demands."

"Our demand is legitimate: calling for an end to the war, the lifting of the American blockade and piracy, and the release of Iranian assets unjustly frozen in banks due to U.S. pressure," Baghaei said. He further noted, "Ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz and establishing security in the region and Lebanon are among Iran's other demands. This is a generous and responsible offer for regional security."
U.S. Rejection and Escalating Tensions
On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s response—delivered via Pakistani mediators—to Washington’s proposal for ending the Middle East conflict. This comes as tensions in the Gulf continue to escalate.
The rejection coincided with reminders from the U.S. and Israel that the military option remains on the table, despite a ceasefire that has been in effect for nearly a month since the war began on February 28.
Trump posted on his Truth Social platform: "I have just read the response from the so-called 'representatives' of Iran. I didn’t like it; it is absolutely unacceptable."
Details of the Iranian Proposal
While official Iranian agencies (IRNA and ISNA) confirmed the response centered on ending the war and maritime security in the Gulf, the Wall Street Journal reported specific details:
Nuclear Program: The proposal reportedly fell short of U.S. demands for prior commitments regarding Iran’s nuclear program and its stockpile of highly enriched uranium.
Enrichment: Tehran proposed lowering enrichment levels for some quantities and transferring the remainder to a third country, alongside a proposal to suspend uranium enrichment for a period of less than 20 years.
Maritime Security: The response focused on a "gradual reopening of the Strait of Hormuz" in exchange for the U.S. lifting its blockade on Iranian ports and vessels.
Economic Impact
The Strait of Hormuz remains a primary flashpoint due to its impact on global shipping and energy prices. Iran currently controls this vital corridor for oil, gas, and fertilizers, having established a payment mechanism to impose fees on transiting vessels—a move Washington countered by blockading Iranian ports.
Following President Trump’s rejection of the proposal, global oil prices surged sharply at the opening of trading on Monday.
