An Iranian armed forces spokesperson said on Monday that U.S. restrictions on ships in international waters are illegal and amount to “piracy,” adding that Iran will firmly implement a “permanent mechanism” to control the Strait of Hormuz following U.S. threats to take control of it.

The spokesperson warned that Gulf ports must either remain accessible to all or to none, stating that no port in the Gulf or the Gulf of Oman would be safe if Iranian ports come under threat.
The warning comes as the United States moves forward with a naval blockade targeting Iranian ports after the failure of negotiations in Islamabad, a development that has already driven oil prices higher.
According to Washington, the blockade is set to begin at 14:00 GMT on Monday and will apply to all vessels heading to or departing from Iranian ports.
U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the timing in a post on Truth Social, stating that the United States would enforce a blockade on ships entering and leaving Iranian ports starting at 10:00 a.m. Washington time on April 13.
The sudden announcement of the blockade, combined with the collapse of talks in Islamabad, has raised renewed concerns over global oil supplies.
