U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he would impose tariffs on imports of drones and their components, including products from some of the United States’ key allies, as his administration said the country is “overly dependent” on foreign sources for drones.

The White House said an executive order signed by Trump imposes 100% ad valorem tariffs on drones of certain sizes and capabilities considered particularly sensitive to national security.
It added that 25% tariffs would apply to smaller drones.
The White House also said 15% tariffs would be imposed on drones and components imported from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland and Taiwan, while drones imported from the United Kingdom would face a 10% ad valorem tariff.
Trump has made tariffs a central pillar of his foreign and trade policies despite legal setbacks and criticism from some analysts.
In the proclamation published by the White House, Trump said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick had conducted an investigation into the effects of drone-system imports.
Trump said Lutnick concluded that drones and components imported from certain foreign entities “pose risks to security and safety,” while the U.S.
domestic industry does not produce enough to meet national security needs.
The White House said the tariffs would take effect within 21 days.
For drone components not considered particularly sensitive, the tariffs will take effect 180 days after the proclamation was signed, it added.
