Xi made the remarks during talks with President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday during an official dinner hosted for the American president, according to China’s Xinhua News Agency.

Thucydides Trap

Xi said the world is passing through a volatile and turbulent period, raising the question of whether China and the United States can avoid the “Thucydides Trap” and build a new model of major-power relations that promotes global stability and serves the future of humanity.

He added that he looks forward to working with Trump to steer the course of China-U.S. relations and open a new chapter in bilateral ties, suggesting that 2026 could become a historic and pivotal year in cooperation between the two countries.

Xi said that constructive strategic stability between Beijing and Washington should be based on cooperation, measured competition, responsible management of disagreements, and a commitment to preserving peace.

Economic Relations

The Chinese president said economic relations between the two countries are mutually beneficial and inherently profitable, noting that the latest round of trade talks between the two sides produced broadly balanced and positive outcomes.

Xi called for maintaining positive momentum in economic and trade relations, reaffirming that China will continue its policy of openness and that American companies are welcome to expand cooperation and investment in the Chinese market.

He also emphasized the importance of broadening bilateral cooperation in:

Economy and trade
Healthcare
Agriculture
Tourism
People-to-people exchanges

Xi further called for stronger political, diplomatic, and military communication channels between the two countries.

Taiwan Issue

Regarding Taiwan, Xi described the issue as “the most important matter” in China-U.S. relations, warning that mishandling it could lead to confrontation or even conflict that would threaten bilateral stability.

He said maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait represents the greatest common interest between China and the United States, adding that so-called “Taiwan independence” is incompatible with peace, “just as fire is incompatible with water.”
