When asked during his visit to Australia about the possibility of Canada joining the United States and Israel in their war against Iran, Carney replied: "Participation cannot be categorically ruled out."
Speaking alongside his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, in Canberra, Carney added: "We will stand by our allies... we will always defend Canadians."
Carney had previously considered the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran to be "contrary to international law." However, he expressed support for efforts aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon, while emphasizing his call for "de-escalation."
Carney's visit to Australia is part of a multi-stop tour in the Asia-Pacific region intended to reduce dependence on the United States. The Australian leg of the trip aims to attract investment and deepen ties with a partner considered a like-minded "middle power."
Notably, Carney has long been in disputes with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly threatened to annex Canada and impose heavy tariffs on it.
