The number of registered refugees and asylum seekers in Jordan decreased to approximately 427,000 by February 2026, representing a 2.3% drop compared to the 437,000 recorded at the end of January, according to data from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

Syrian refugees continue to make up the vast majority of the registered population:

Distribution and Living Conditions
Urban Areas: 343,703 refugees (80.5%) live in cities and towns across Jordan.
Refugee Camps: 83,228 refugees (19.5%) reside in camps.
Zaatari Camp: 49,596 residents.
Azraq Camp: 33,475 residents.
Half of the Refugee Population are Children
Children account for nearly half of the total refugee population in Jordan, totaling 209,467 (49.06%).

Gender Breakdown: Females represent 48.06% of the total population, while males represent 47.72%.
Geographic Concentration:
The capital, Amman, hosts the largest number of refugees (147,038), followed by Irbid (71,939) and Mafraq (52,803).
Voluntary Returns to Syria
Since December 8, 2024, through mid-February 2026, more than 185,000 Syrian refugees have voluntarily returned from Jordan to Syria.
However, UNHCR noted a significant decline in return rates since the beginning of Ramadan. Between February 22 and 28, only 350 registered refugees returned, marking a 65% decrease compared to the previous week, which saw 1,000 returns.
