The Parliamentary Energy and Mineral Resources Committee on Wednesday called for improving energy efficiency and reducing waste, amid rapid regional developments and their impact on global energy markets, supply costs and fuel prices.اضافة اعلان

The call came during a meeting chaired by MP Dr. Ayman Abu Hneya.

Abu Hneya said energy efficiency is a national responsibility linked to both national and economic security, noting that improving consumption patterns would help ease the burden on citizens, the national economy and the public treasury, while strengthening Jordan’s ability to respond to regional and international changes.

He explained that the residential sector accounts for around 46% of total energy consumption in the Kingdom, according to available data, underscoring the importance of developing programs aimed at optimizing resource use and improving the efficiency of appliances, buildings and facilities.

He stressed the need to distinguish between waste resulting from improper use and technical losses in networks, allowing sources of energy loss to be addressed on clear technical grounds.

He also called for encouraging citizens to adopt simple daily practices, such as switching off unused appliances and lights, setting air-conditioning and heating systems to moderate temperatures, using energy-efficient lighting and making better use of daylight.

Abu Hneya urged industrial and commercial establishments, hotels and government institutions to conduct regular energy audits, upgrade high-consumption equipment and implement modern control systems to reduce operating costs and improve performance.

He said the committee would continue its oversight role in monitoring policies and measures related to energy efficiency and waste reduction, in cooperation with relevant authorities, to ensure that recommendations are translated into practical steps that enhance the sustainability of energy supplies and support the competitiveness of the national economy.

He stressed that rationalizing consumption does not mean compromising citizens’ basic needs, but rather aims to optimize resource use and provide required services at lower cost, making energy efficiency a sustainable approach in homes, institutions and economic facilities.

On national affairs, Abu Hneya underscored the importance of joint efforts to safeguard Jordan’s security and stability and protect its national resources, drawing confidence and determination from the leadership of His Majesty King Abdullah II.

He noted that the partnership between the state, citizens and the private sector is a key pillar in addressing challenges and strengthening the sustainability of the energy sector.

MPs Khader Bani Khalid, Jamal Qamouh, Iman Al-Abbasi, Naseem Al-Abbadi and Suleiman Al-Zaben also stressed the importance of raising national awareness of energy efficiency, intensifying efforts to protect national resources, reducing costs and strengthening energy supply security.
