Jordan’s Minister of Education and Human Resources Development, Dr. Azmi Mahafzah, chaired a seminar titled “Modernizing Education and Higher Education” at Applied Science Private University.

The dialogue seminar was organized by Applied Science Private University in cooperation with the Ilaf Center for Studies and Research. It brought together Hashemite University Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Ruweida Al-Maaytah and National Center for Curriculum Development Director Dr. Mohammad Kinana, and was moderated by Sami Al-Quraan. A number of academics and education-sector specialists also attended.
The seminar featured an extensive discussion on efforts to modernize Jordan’s education system in line with the Economic Modernization Vision, as well as ways to develop education policies and practices to meet future requirements and labor market needs.
Mahafzah said education is one of the state’s most important pillars and a key area for future investment. He noted that developing the education system is an ongoing process aimed at improving educational outcomes and strengthening their ability to respond to rapidly changing conditions.
Mahafzah reviewed key developments in secondary education, explaining that secondary school now extends over three years, after which students move into either an academic or vocational track as part of efforts to reorganize educational pathways and better align them with students’ choices and labor market needs.
He also discussed the system of specialized fields and its connection to future university majors, along with developments in secondary examinations and requirements for transitioning to higher education.
Mahafzah stressed the importance of strengthening the status of vocational and technical education amid challenges resulting from higher demand for academic education compared with vocational pathways, and the resulting impact on both the education system and labor market.
Digital transformation was also a major focus of the discussion. Mahafzah said the ministry is moving toward digitizing curricula and developing educational content through the “Ajyal” platform and the “Siraj” smart assistant, emphasizing the importance of effectively utilizing and regulating educational platforms in support of the learning process.
He said the fundamental goal of education reform is to develop students who possess critical-thinking skills, knowledge and the capabilities needed for lifelong learning and for meeting the demands of the future.
The seminar also addressed curriculum development, the future of academic and vocational education, digital transformation, challenges facing the education and higher education sectors, and ways to strengthen integration between the different stages of education.
The event reflects Applied Science Private University’s commitment to hosting national dialogue on educational issues and bringing together policymakers and academic and education experts to discuss the future of education, its challenges and opportunities for development, contributing to broader discussion of education policies and their alignment with Jordan’s needs and the future of its younger generations.
