Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York on Friday.
During the meeting, Safadi and Araghchi discussed efforts to end the dangerous escalation in the region and reach a sustainable ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, leading to a comprehensive solution to the crisis.
Safadi stressed the importance of concerted efforts to restore calm and achieve lasting security and stability on foundations that guarantee the security and stability of all countries in the region, respect international law and the principles of good-neighborly relations, and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.
He also emphasized the need to respect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
Safadi renewed Jordan’s condemnation of the Iranian attacks against Jordan and the Gulf Cooperation Council states and stressed the need for them to stop. He affirmed that Jordan will continue taking all necessary and available measures to confront these attacks and protect its territory, sovereignty and the safety of its citizens.
Safadi stressed the importance of adopting dialogue and diplomacy as the means to address all causes of tension and escalation that have persisted over previous years and to consolidate security and stability in the region.
