The Greater Irbid Municipality began work early Tuesday morning to remove the Al-Thaqafa Roundabout in preparation for the installation of a smart traffic signal, as part of a broader package of traffic solutions announced by the municipality to reduce congestion in the city.
Municipality spokesperson Ghaith Al-Tal said that municipal crews and machinery have started the technical and on-site preparations for the project. He explained that the roundabout requires precise infrastructure work before the traffic signal can be installed and integrated technically in accordance with approved traffic engineering standards.
Al-Tal noted that the current phase includes clearing soil and trees from the roundabout area to facilitate installation and utility work. He emphasized that the surrounding curb stones (Qweismeh stones) will remain in place and that no changes will be made to the roundabout’s physical structure at this stage until all components of the project are ready and the smart signal is installed.
He added that the new traffic signal will be electronically linked to the coordinated network of nearby traffic lights, enabling better traffic management and smoother vehicle flow. The municipality considers the project a practical traffic solution to address congestion at this key intersection.
