Ziad Al-Sa’aydeh, Chairman of the Energy and Minerals Regulatory Commission, confirmed that the rise in citizens’ electricity bills during winter is mainly due to higher energy consumption, as households move into higher usage brackets.

Al-Sa’aydeh explained on Tuesday that the increase in December electricity bills is primarily linked to consumption growth, not price hikes, noting that electricity tariffs have remained unchanged since 2022.
He highlighted that electric loads in December rose significantly, reaching 3,900–4,200 MW, compared to 2,500–2,600 MW in October and November.
Regarding meter readings, Al-Sa’aydeh confirmed that 95% of electricity meters are smart meters, operating electronically without human intervention. He emphasized that readings are accurate, reflect actual consumption over 30 days, and there are no estimated or incorrect readings.
He urged citizens to use electrical appliances efficiently in winter, maintain them regularly, and set air conditioners to 24°C to keep consumption within normal limits without affecting the bill.
Al-Sa’aydeh stressed that the electricity meter is the link between the utility and the consumer, and proper appliance use can prevent excessive energy consumption.
For customer complaints, he noted that the commission’s doors are open, with a dedicated unit sending engineers to homes to inspect meters and appliances to identify and resolve any issues.
