This initiative is part of the Solid Waste Management in Jordan (SOWAS) project, funded by the German Government and the European Union, and implemented by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). It aligns with ongoing efforts to enhance integrated waste management and activate resource recovery pathways.
Objectives of the Project
The project aims to:
Target organic waste generated from market activities.
Divert waste from landfills to treatment and recovery facilities.
Reduce the volume of waste sent to dumpsites and lower environmental impacts and emissions.
Transform organic waste into a resource for compost production according to best environmental practices.
Awareness and Implementation
Eng. Basem Al-Hawamdeh, Director of the Environmental Studies Department, emphasized that the operational phase was preceded by intensive awareness campaigns. These campaigns targeted traders and market workers to explain sorting mechanisms and the project's environmental and economic benefits. Follow-up campaigns were also conducted to ensure high response rates and meet performance indicators.
Al-Hawamdeh noted that this pilot phase will measure operational efficiency, compliance rates, and the quality of the output. Any field challenges will be addressed immediately, paving the way for a gradual expansion to other GAM-affiliated markets using the same approved model.
