Suleiman made the remarks during the opening of a meeting of the National Ozone Committee, attended by the committee’s chairman and Secretary-General of the Ministry, Omar Arabiyat, as well as committee members and representatives of national and international entities involved in implementing the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and the Kigali Amendment.

He stressed the importance of the National Ozone Committee in unifying national efforts and enhancing coordination among the various stakeholders, ensuring that Jordan continues to meet its international commitments to protect the ozone layer and gradually phase down ozone-depleting substances and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs).

Protecting the ozone layer represents a successful model of international environmental cooperation, Suleiman said, adding that Jordan is committed to continuing its partnerships with international institutions in a way that contributes to achieving environmental and climate goals and supporting sustainable development in the Kingdom.

The meeting discussed the responsibilities, objectives and work priorities of the National Ozone Committee, and reviewed key achievements, programs and projects being implemented by national and international institutions under the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment.

Participants also discussed ways to strengthen cooperation and coordination among relevant stakeholders, support the implementation of national commitments to reduce ozone-depleting substances and HFCs, and promote the use of alternatives and technologies with a lower impact on the climate.

Representatives from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) took part in the meeting.

The meeting concluded with an open discussion on opportunities to advance national efforts and strengthen coordination between institutions and international partners, supporting the continued implementation of Jordan’s commitments under the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment and reinforcing the Kingdom’s role in international efforts to protect the ozone layer and advance climate action.
