According to Nawaf Al-Ajarmeh, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development for Educational Affairs, having teaching staff report a week prior to students serves as a key pillar to ensure a smooth and organized start. This period is dedicated to completing vital preparations, including:
Preparing classroom environments, school facilities, and logistics.
Receiving, inventorying, and organizing textbooks for distribution on day one.
Administering make-up exams, processing results, organizing student lists, finalizing class distributions, enrolling transfer students, and drafting annual and terminal lesson plans.
Al-Ajarmeh addressed recent discussion surrounding the school start date, clarifying that commencing classes on August 23 is not a new decision, but a standard schedule implemented for three consecutive academic years to meet educational objectives.
He explained that the school calendar complies with Article 12, Paragraph (1/a) of the Education and Human Resource Development Law—passed by Parliament and ratified by Royal Decree—which mandates a minimum of 200 actual school days per academic year. The calendar accounts for official holidays while fulfilling legal requirements and educational programming.
Furthermore, the schedule supports the Ministry’s sustainable national learning recovery initiative aimed at bridging learning loss, boosting foundational skills, and elevating academic performance. Diagnostic surveys measuring the impact of these remedial programs showed marked improvements in student achievement—particularly in reading and mathematics—confirming the effectiveness of the strategy and the necessity of continuing it.
