The Director General of Jordan Airports Company, Ahmed Al-Azzam, announced that the opening of Amman Civil Airport will take place within a few days.
He confirmed that the company is currently awaiting final licensing from the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission after completing all safety and modernization requirements at the airport.
Al-Azzam explained that Amman Civil Airport will serve as a secondary (backup) facility to Queen Alia International Airport, helping ease the flow of passenger and aircraft traffic handled through Queen Alia.
He added that the airport will receive medium-sized aircraft with a maximum capacity of around 200 passengers and an approximate weight of 80 tons, noting that such aircraft are typically used by low-cost tourism airlines.
He pointed out that medium-sized aircraft normally operate routes to the Middle East and Europe, and emphasized that operating costs for airlines at Amman Civil Airport will be lower.
Al-Azzam also revealed ongoing communication with several low-cost carriers—including Wizz Air, Ryanair, flynas, Air Cairo, and others—to attract their operations to Amman Civil Airport.
He expects aircraft belonging to these airlines to begin arriving in the first few months of next year, once their existing commitments with Queen Alia International Airport conclude.
Al-Azzam stressed that operating Amman Civil Airport will contribute to reducing tourism costs and increasing the flow of tourists into the country.
He also noted that Jordan Airports Company has coordinated with the Greater Amman Municipality and the Traffic Department to prepare appropriate traffic and road arrangements around the airport to facilitate access.
Prime Minister Jaafar Hassan had previously stated that reopening Amman Civil Airport in Marka, after several years of closure, would enhance economic and tourism opportunities for Amman and Jordan as a whole.
