Researchers from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Poland have revealed remarkable health benefits of purple-colored fruits and vegetables, confirming that they help protect cells from damage and improve the body’s recovery after physical activity — making them an essential dietary component for enhancing health and combating aging.

According to the study, published in the journal Nutrients, foods such as purple berries, blackcurrants, purple sweet potatoes, and red cabbage are rich in anthocyanins — natural antioxidants known for their strong ability to reduce inflammation and support cardiovascular health.
The researchers noted that these compounds activate key cellular pathways such as Nrf2 and NF-κB, helping the body resist oxidative stress caused by intense exercise or aging. The findings showed that individuals who include purple foods in their diet enjoy greater physical endurance and slower cellular aging.
Scientists explained that the body absorbs only about 2% of anthocyanins, but combining them with vitamin C sources can significantly enhance their bioavailability. Ongoing research is exploring advanced supplement technologies — such as capsules and nanoemulsions — to further improve their effectiveness.
The study concluded that regular consumption of purple fruits and vegetables is a simple and safe step to promote overall health, prevent chronic diseases, and improve long-term quality of life.
