The journal Nutrients reported that a study conducted by researchers at the University of Idaho found that adults obtain, on average, about 680 mg of polyphenols per month from spices alone, accounting for roughly 12% of the total dietary intake of these compounds. Polyphenols are renowned for their anti-inflammatory properties, promoting cardiovascular health, enhancing metabolism, and slowing cellular aging.

The study involved 212 participants who reported consuming 27 types of spices and herbs, with black pepper, cinnamon, and cloves being the most commonly used. These were identified as the main sources of polyphenols. The Phenol-Explorer database confirmed that these spices contain high concentrations of beneficial active compounds.

The researchers noted that most nutritional studies often overlook spices as a source of beneficial compounds, which may lead to underestimating the actual intake of antioxidants. They added that incorporating spices into the diet is a simple way to enhance the nutritional value of food without increasing calories, emphasizing the importance of including spices in future dietary surveys to accurately assess their contribution to health.

Studies also indicate that certain spices, such as turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and chili, are important sources of beneficial compounds that support the immune system, maintain cardiovascular health, and combat aging.
