The study, published in the journal Food & Function, found that consuming 40 grams of walnuts before bedtime for eight weeks increased melatonin production, improved sleep quality, and boosted daytime alertness in young adults.
Maria Izquierdo-Pulido, the study’s lead author and Professor of Food Science and Culinary Arts at the University of Barcelona, said: “Our study is the first to provide experimental evidence through a dietary intervention showing a causal relationship between daily walnut consumption and improved sleep quality,” according to Health magazine.
