A Russian missile attack targeting the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, injured six people on Saturday, as Moscow continues to intensify its strikes on the city.
Russia has carried out regular missile and drone attacks on Kyiv since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine in February 2022.
However, Moscow’s use of high-speed ballistic missiles has posed a growing challenge to Ukraine’s air defense systems. Earlier this week, the explosion of a missile over Kyiv awakened residents before air raid sirens began to sound.
“The number of injured people in the capital has risen to six,” Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s Military Administration, wrote on Telegram.
Earlier, Tkachenko said that Russia was “launching a missile attack on the capital” and urged residents to “remain in safe places.”
He added that three people were hospitalized, while three others received treatment at the scene, without providing further details.
AFP journalists in Kyiv reported hearing two waves of explosions in the early hours of Saturday. Air raid sirens sounded several minutes after the first blast.
The attacks came a day after Ukraine launched drone strikes targeting oil refineries in southern Russia as part of Kyiv’s strategy of striking Russian energy infrastructure.
