Poland’s new president, Karol Nawrocki, has called on Germany to pay reparations for damages suffered during World War II, during a ceremony marking the anniversary of the German invasion of Poland in 1939.

Speaking at the Westerplatte War Memorial in Gdańsk on Monday, Nawrocki said:
"In order to build a partnership based on truth and good relations, we must settle the issue of reparations from the German state."
The Polish Press Agency (PAP) quoted the right-wing conservative politician as saying:
"Poland, as a frontline country and a key nation on NATO’s eastern flank, needs justice and truth, clear relations with Germany, and also reparations from the German state." He called on the Polish government to support the implementation of this demand.
In recent years, Poland’s conservative Law and Justice party has focused heavily on the issue of claiming reparations from Germany for the severe damages inflicted on Poland during World War II. The party also supported Nawrocki’s election as president, despite him not being affiliated with any political party. He assumed office in early August.
Germany maintains that the issue was definitively settled under the treaties following German reunification, which stated that Poland has no entitlement to reparations.
Nazi Germany sparked World War II by invading Poland on September 1, 1939. In one of the first battles, a German warship bombed the Westerplatte military site in Gdańsk, where Polish defenders withstood superior Nazi forces for seven days.
