British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced on Monday that he is stepping down from his position, stating that he will remain in office until the process of selecting a new leader of the Labour Party is completed and an orderly transfer of power is ensured.
Starmer said he would do “everything possible to ensure an orderly transition of power,” adding that he had spoken with King Charles III earlier in the day regarding his decision.
He indicated that he would ask the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to establish a timetable for the leadership election process, noting that nominations for the party leadership will open on July 9.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said: “Every decision I have taken has been guided by putting the country I love first. For that reason, I will resign as Leader of the Labour Party.”
