In a statement, police said the New South Wales Joint Counter Terrorism Team has formally charged a 24-year-old man, who is alleged to be one of two gunmen responsible for a mass shooting at Bondi Beach that left 15 people dead.

According to the statement, emergency services were called to Bondi Beach at approximately 6:40 p.m. last Sunday following reports of gunfire in a public place.

Officers from the Eastern Suburbs Police Area Command, surrounding commands, and specialist police units responded immediately and found two men using long firearms to shoot at crowds of people.

Police said several officers exchanged gunfire with the attackers, during which two officers—a police officer and a probationary constable—were wounded by gunshots.

During the incident, police shot one of the gunmen, a 50-year-old man, who died at the scene.

The second gunman, his 24-year-old son, sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital under police guard.

Fifteen people were killed in the attack, and 41 others—including four children—were taken to hospital. Currently, 20 patients remain under medical care at several hospitals across Sydney.

Formal identification of the victims is still underway; however, police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years.

Following extensive investigations, detectives from the Organized Crime Squad attended a hospital and charged the 24-year-old man from Bonnyrigg with 59 offenses, including terrorism.
