At least 11 people, including four children, were killed in floods and landslides caused by unprecedented heavy rainfall in India’s Jammu and Kashmir region, officials announced on Saturday.

A severe monsoon storm that hit the region since Tuesday caused widespread chaos, flooding homes and bridges.
A local disaster management official said that the Ramban and Reasi districts experienced heavy rain and landslides on Friday night, resulting in 11 deaths.
The official added that a five-year-old child remains missing, trapped under debris.
The Indian Meteorological Department reported that rainfall reached unprecedented levels at two locations in the region.
On Wednesday, Jammu and Udhampur recorded the highest 24-hour rainfall rates, with 296 mm in Jammu—9% above the 1973 record—and 629.4 mm in Udhampur, an 84% increase over 2019.
Floods and landslides frequently occur during the monsoon season from June to September, but experts warn that climate change and poor urban planning are increasing their frequency, intensity, and impact. – AFP
